The normal first thing to do is start out with a parts list and work from there. Here's a list of the major components of the IBM 8227....
| Function | Part | Manufacturer | Notes |
| CPU | 80486SX-33 | Intel | |
| Support chipset | 82C491 | UMC | standard 486 PC chipset (with VL bus support) |
| PCMCIA Controller | PD-6710 | Cirrus Logic | single socket |
| Ethernet controller | DP83905AV (AT/LANTIC) | NatSemi | very common NE2000 compatible controller |
| RAM | 4c16257-6 (Qt 2) | Micron | Each: 4Mbit (256Kx16), FPM, Dual CAS |
| Cache (probably) | W2465S-70 (Qt 2) | Winbond | Each: 64k (8kx8), 70ns, Async SRAM |
| System ROM (64kb) | 27C512 | ST | IBM and NatSemi data |
| EEPROM (for 83905?) | 93C06 |
The rest of the chips are just general logic and support. Nothing interesting. The only interesting label is the one from Phoenix that says "PhoenixBIOS A486SX H01098". That matches the data at 0xe000 of the system EPROM. I am currently unable to retrieve the data from the 83905 EEPROM (which should include startup parameters like the ethernet MAC address and the address of the Boot PROM (contained in the system ROM)). System ROM is labelled "IBM AP 8205 951130". Main PCB is marked "8227-5XA".
No one should have any trouble finding complete documentation on all the above chips. The only mysterious part is the ROM data.
